Luffy
Luffy’s human came home from work to find Luffy miserable and unable to move his hind legs.
Paralysis in dogs is a medical emergency and very distressing. Paralysis can be permanent or temporary and can be caused by a number of problems, each of which requires different treatment. Injury, some infectious diseases, tick toxicity and cancer are known causes.
Puppies can become paralyzed with heavy loads of parasites. (It is important that pet owners keep up to date with their pet’s parasite medication: once a month for all-in-one medicines like Simparica Trio of Nexgard Spactra). We therefore gave Luffy Simparica Trio for fleas, ticks, heart and intestinal worms, while Luffy’s human gathered all the info needed to help Doc make a diagnosis and to prescribe specific treatment: Luffy’s age and weight and videos of him trying to move and responding to having his toes pinched.
Despite Doc being in South America he got back to us quickly and was able to see that Luffy’s heavy breathing and swollen and anus were indications of severe belly pain. Doc prescribed a pain killer (Carprofen a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) and antibiotics.
Luffy’s person diligently made sure Luffy took all his meds. In a few days Luffy looked happy and was eating well and a few days later still, Luffy’s humans excitedly sent a video of Luffy up and about and all legs and looking good.
Big thanks to Doc Joseph for volunteering his time and expertise. Treatment and telehealth consultation would have cost over $200 if charged.
