Doc Joseph and nurses Gabbe and Charley ran a veterinary clinic at the New Tokyo Medical College from July 19-24, 2023. Forty-four animals visited the clinic. Three cats and 14 dogs were spayed, and 8 cats and 5 dogs were neutered, along with 14 non-surgical visits.
All dogs that came to the clinic we. Cats were screened for feline AIDS were screened for heart worm, erlichia and anaplasma bacteria. Cats were screened for feline AIDS. Approximately 20% of dogs were positive for mosquito borne heartworm, and slightly more were positive for tick-borne anaplasma bacteria. One cat tested positive for feline AIDS.
Most dogs do not get sick from anaplasma infection, but those that do can have symptoms of bloody nose, lethargy, fever, loss of appetite, pain, cough or lameness.
These screening results show how important it is to keep up to date with flea, tick and worm prevention and vaccinations in pets.
The fee for service remained at $10; well below the actual cost for the procedures performed.
A big thank you to every who donated cash, airline miles, car rental and accommodation. Without this generosity we could not continue to bring the vet team to Pohnpei. Thanks also to the COM volunteers. The volunteers were able to witness some surgeries and learn about sterile procedures, post op care and general animal care.
